CRH Music in Conjunction with The Thunderbolt Presents;

WILLIE NILE + Jefferson Grizzard

WILLIE NILE:Anyone who’s paid attention to his recent output knows that Willie Nile is currently in the midst of a creative renaissance that’s produced some of the most compelling music of his 35-year career. The tradition continued with his last album American Ride, which has been lauded by critics and fans alike.

Willie Nile's fans include Bruce Springsteen, with whom he’s guested onstage on multiple occasions, and Pete Townshend, who personally requested him as the opening act on the Who’s 1982 US tour. Other avowed Nile admirers include Bono, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Jim Jarmusch, Adam Duritz, Little Steven and Lucinda Williams, who once remarked: 'Willie Nile is a great artist. If there was any justice in this world, I’d be opening up for him instead of him for me.'

Willie's forthcoming new album 'If I Was A River' will be released on 11th November and will be available at the show!

'Willie puts life into song like only a few in the world can!' – Marky Ramone

'Willie’s so good I can’t believe he’s not from New Jersey!' – Little Steven

daft

Thursday 27 November

SNG Promotions Presents

3 DAFT MONKEYS

3 DAFT MONKEYS: Cornish gypsy-folk band 3 Daft Monkeys’ 4-piece line-up features Athene on fiddle, Tim on 12-string guitar & vocals, Lukas on bass guitar and Richie on percussion, adding a fuller and richer sound. The band weave world music influences around classic folk melodies and their passion, intensity and sheer joy of life mixed with their infectious dancing rhythms will leave you breathless, enthralled and exhilarated. The desire to dance at one of their live shows is irresistible!

3 Daft Monkeys release their sixth studio album 'Of Stones and Bones' in 2013 - their most story-led and theatrical album to date; a compelling collection of songs that draws the listener into the bizarre and mysterious world of Cornish tales and superstitions, both ancient and modern.

Tim Ashton and Athene Roberts form the heart of the band, and during a break from gigging due to the birth of their son Arlo, Ashton turned his songwriting gaze on his adopted home county of Cornwall. The wild Celtic heritage and folklore of Kernow shines through in these songs, the roots of which delve deep, touching the stones and bones that are the fabric of this epic landscape and its wild and colourful inhabitants.

Characters are brought to life in a theatre of sound, from upbeat mischievous musings on the god of the sea, Bucca Dhu, to the tragic and heart-wrenching tale of Jenny Trayer and her unfortunate child, from tales of curses inspired by a hair-raising night in the Boscastle Witch Museum to the eccentric story of Reverend Hawker, all the colourful otherworldly life of the region is here.

In traditional 3 Daft Monkeys style, the songs hold up a looking glass to their subjects and invite us to step through, much like Alice into a Wonderland. Whilst exploring the old tales, Ashton manages to throw new light on them; in 'St Agnes the Giant Killer’ he poses the question of whether the sainted local heroine Agnes was just a cold hearted murderess? Likewise in the playful 'One and All' he considers what has happened to the elusive Cornish quest for independence.

Whilst containing the intoxicating blend of rhythms and styles that is instantly recognisable as 3 Daft Monkeys, there is also an added dimension of traditional Cornish tunes within the songs. Of Stones and Bones' is musically the most diverse album the band has produced, and the first that double bass player Lukas Drinkwater has performed on. He also lends his vocal skills making it possible for the first time to create spine-tingling three-part harmonies. To add a new dynamic impact, percussionist Rich Mulryne, has been invited to lend his varied drumming styles both to this album and the live shows.

3DM is the perfect band to engage with this mythic landscape, themselves icons of the underground counter culture of the last decade.

STONE COLD FICTION + Glue Foot + Social Glitch

STONE COLD FICTION: Bristol based alternative rock three piece band. Having formed in December 2013, Stone Cold Fiction have taken to the Bristol music scene fast, playing some of the city’s biggest venues like The Fleece, The Louisiana and The Exchange. Alongside these big-name venues, they have played a range of pubs and even a guitar shop. Stone Cold Fiction had their first headline gig at The Louisiana, following this they were asked back to headline for a second time. The band was then asked to headline The Exchange shortly after.

Stone Cold Fiction features a tight rhythm section which accompanies frantic, melodic and dirty guitar riffs, creating an altogether unique sound. Even though the band is still in its first year, they have several originals ranging from bluesy rock to upbeat/heavy to melodic indie-rock. Stone Cold Fiction are currently recording their debut EP.

CRH Music Presents:

THE PETUNIA DUO + Nathan Godfery

Petunia has played two memorable previous shows in Bristol, fronting his band Petunia and the Vipers, and he's back this time with guitar ace Nathan Godfrey. Whether he's paying tribute to Jimmie Rogers, performing a unique interpretation of Edith Piaf, or showing why he's been described as a yodelling hillbilly baby of David Lynch and Nick Cave, the only consistent thing about him is that whatever he does it's probably unexpected and unquestionably brilliant.

MIKE PETERS (THE ALARM)

Mike Peters, lead singer and songwriter of internationally acclaimed Welsh band The Alarm will this year embark on a huge 30 date acoustic World Tour, celebrating 30 years of The Alarm's distinctive Red Poppy. The exploding Red Poppy made it's iconic debut on the band's 'Marching On' single (released via the IRS Record label back in 1982) and has featured in some shape or form on every Alarm release since.

The Red Poppy Tour begins with an Independence day 'Spirit Of '76' concert in New York on July 4th, followed by dates all across Europe (including concerts on the summits of both Snowdon and Ben Nevis - The Highest Gig in Britain on August 25th), and closing at The Alarm's legendary Gathering event in Peters' hometown of Prestatyn, North Wales on January 25th 2013. The Mike Peters 'Red Poppy' Tour will carry the life affirming spirit of The Alarm as epitomised in it's flaming blood red poppy logo (which in itself is a symbol of both renewal and life) to music fans everywhere.

Outside of Mike's duties as front man for The Alarm (and more recently as guest vocalist with Scottish celt-rockers Big Country), Mike has proved himself as an inspirational solo acoustic performer and (as a two times cancer survivor), founder of what is now regarded as the world's leading rock and roll cancer charity 'Love Hope Strength Foundation'.

Mike Peters is currently preparing for the release of a brand new Alarm record Vinyl - The Official Soundtrack Album, to be released in 2013 with a major UK Alarm tour to coincide with 'Vinyl' - the film's British cinematic debut and remains as passionate as ever about his music, Wales and his charity Love Hope Strength.

When Mike was first diagnosed with cancer in 1995, quitting music wasn't an option and now in 2012 and in his second remission from Leukaemia, Mike is still challenging himself and his audience through music and the outreach of his charitable actions. In Mike's own words and from the title of one of his own songs `Never give it up without a fight`

And it is to this man alone we turn tonight; every bit as powerful and commanding armed with acoustic guitar, harmonica and those songs of hope, spirituality, camaraderie and lifelong friendship amongst fans; fifteen hit singles including 68 Guns, Spirit of 76, Rain In The Summertime, Strength and The Stand; five million albums sold; pioneering musicality and stage-sharing duties with Dylan, U2 and Neil Young. It all adds up, don't it? No wonder Mike Peters is a legend.

LENE

Thursday 05 March

LENE LOVICH BAND

Detroit-born legendary post-punk pop singer Lene Lovich hit the top of the UK charts with her single 'Lucky Number' in 1979, and was crowned the 'Queen of Quirk', influencing a generation of pop and alternative acts, from Nina Hagen to Boy George, and from Madonna to Dresden Dolls. A normally reclusive figure, Lovich turned her back on the limelight after her third album No Man’s Land was released in 1982 amid disagreements with her record company about her unwillingness to compromise her groundbreaking visual style for the then newly emergent MTV.

Subsequently she has recorded only two albums in the last thirty years. Lovich’s unique vocal and visual style, along with her catchy but experimental songwriting, has exerted a huge influence over alternative pop culture and garnered her many plaudits and continued interest. She has been described as everything from 'Kate Bush on acid' to the New Wave Maria Callas'. Her hits 'Lucky Number', 'Say When', 'Bird Song' and 'New Toy' are still regular features in the clubs and radio of Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA.

In May 2012, Lene joined forces with Subterraneans frontman Jude Rawlins for a celebration of the music of German composer Kurt Weill. During the tour they hatched an idea to form a new band to take Lene’s classic material back on the road. Jude immediately recruited bassist Lydia Fischer and drummer Morgan King in June, and keyboardist Kirsten Morrison joined in July. It was a baptism of fire for the new band, after just one low-key show at London’s much-loved 12 Bar Club, their next appearance was headlining the annual Drop Dead Festival in Berlin. Since then they have, in the words of one reviewer, been 'festooned with metaphorical bouquets'.across the UK and Europe. Their UK tour in 2013 culminated in a triumphant sell-out show at London's Cargo, a feat repeated in Berlin a few weeks later at the celebrated Wild At Heart in Kreuzberg.

With new bassist Valkyrie on board, the band are back on the road in 2014.
