WRECKLESS ERIC & AMY RIGBY+ DJ Bruce Revolution

Eric agrees.`Now we only fuck it up half of the time.` Combining several decades of acclaimed records and failed relationships, Eric (`maverick genius` Record Collector) and Amy (`poet laureate of bohemian domesticity` Memphis Flyer) join together to play their should-be, could-be and has-been hits, accompanying each other with harmonies, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards and beatbox. An album of eleven new songs and one cover version is on its way, played and sung entirely by the courageous pair. www.amyrigby.com www.wrecklesseric.com Tickets £7 from Bristol Ticket Shop £10 on the Door

Saturday 01 May
HIJAK OSCAR
If you've been watching the sad procession of bands on Channel 4's Sunday afternoon Mobile Unsigned with Alex Zane you'll have seen one act stand out; and the camera panning across Jo Whiley, Alex James and company all mouthing `Wow`. That would be Hijak Oscar, then. Named after the band on a doomed riverboat and mashing Tom Waits with Floyd, and Son House with The Who, this six-piece is completely original; utterly compelling and when they're flipping huge in 2010 you can say you were on 'em first here. York's 7-piece answer to Brian Wilson's imagination gently developing in the hands and harmonica of Tim Fox. A sound of sex, soul and searing imagination with an arsenal of instruments including sax, mandolin, banjo, slide, piano and, of course, guitars - electric and acoustic . Tim's 'born in the wrong era' blues vocals and Emma's collar-grabbing voice top off a delicate, harmonious and impassioned performance all dressed up Tarantino-stylee. Is there something special happening here? We think so ... www.hijakoscar.co.uk £4 Adv from Bristol Ticket Shop Tel 01179299008 £5 on the door

ATTILA

Wednesday 12 May
ATTILA THE STOCKBROKER + DAVID ROVICS + Gecko
Sharp tongued, high energy, social surrealist rebel poet and songwriter Attila the Stockbroker comes to the Thunderbolt. His themes are topical, his words hard-hitting, his politics unashamedly radical, but Attila will make you roar with laughter as well as seethe with anger... Inspired by the spirit and the 'Do It Yourself' ethos of punk rock, and above all by The Clash and their overtly radical, political stance, he started as a punk bass player in 1977 and took the name Attila the Stockbroker in 1980, blagging spots for his poems and songs in between bands at punk gigs. He quickly got a couple of John Peel radio sessions, a deal with London independent label Cherry Red Records and before very long was on the cover of Melody Maker. Some of which reached places far beyond our own postcode. In 2007, People Tree Records of London, UK released the majority of our two EPs to the world on one reasonably priced compact disc & weighty slab of vinyl. DEAN FRIEDMAN
Dean Friedman first delighted UK audiences with his chart-topping hit, Lucky Stars. The now classic single paved the way for a slew of hits off of Friedman's critically acclaimed album, `Well, Well`Said the Rocking Chair`, including familiar tracks, Lydia, Rocking Chair, Woman of Mine, McDonald’s Girl and Ariel. `An amazing Talent!` - Sun, `Outstanding!`- Record Business; `Songsmith extraordinaire!` - Music Week; `Absolutely Fabulous!` – Hot Press; are just a few of the superlatives used to describe Friedman's unique and original talent. Friedman has since earned a loyal, international following and his music continues to influence a new generation of contemporary artists, inspiring covers and re-workings of his songs by popular groups such as Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and the Blenders. The UK band, Half-Man, Half-Biscuit, even had a hit record with their song, ‘The Bastard Son of Dean Friedman’. (A claim Friedman emphatically denies.) Recently, Friedman has enjoyed a string of internet hits off his album, ‘Squirrels in the Attic’. The fan-funded album has been winning numerous online awards and garnering rave reviews. It contains a batch of hilarious new songs covering a myriad of topics including cloning, Monica Lewinsky, the joys of an illicit herb, and the plight of Koala bears affected by global warming. Friedman will be performing songs from throughout his three-decade career, including familiar, early radio hits and recent fan favorites. His acoustic show has to be seen to be believed. Ex Punks and new fans attracted by his TV and film roles are treated to a mix of punk, country and pure rock'n'roll. Some people were just born to be stars. There just seems to be something about them - the way they talk, the way they carry themselves, the way their battered lives intigue us. Ed Tudorpole is one! THE PIGS:The Pigs were a loveable Bristol band who, like so many, were galvanised by a another local band - The Cortinas - to form and play. Unlike many others they got to record a single for posterity - the excellent 'National Front'. As the history below recounts there were the usual highs and lows including, stabbings, playing the Roxy, the single's release and it being played by John Peel and of course realising the dream was over.
